Debut Album

Katy Kirby by Hunt Pennington

I heard the title song from Katy Kirby’s debut album, Cool Dry Place by chance in a random mix on Youtube. I was instantly struck by Kirby’s voice and vulnerability over her rhythmic muted strum and the hiss of the amp. The melody invited me to listen closely to the cooly-told story of what may be a tale of on and off lovers or a requiem for a friendship. I admit I sang the chorus a few times.

Cool Dry Place resolves in crescendo, giving the singer room to express the emotion building throughout the song, and her amplified guitar screams in stereo descending to the soft and caressing bubbly synth and noise. Expertly written, crafted, and produced. Needless to say, I love the song. The album as a whole is so easy to listen to. I expect to be more critical of my finds in New Music Mondays, but Kirby has the sound, the story, and the style to “make it” in a genre starving for novel, versatile talent.

I look forward to seeing the Cool Dry Place album receive the recognition it deserves and hearing much, much more from Kirby. Anyone looking for the young, fresh, example of indie-pop/rock will find this album an exact fit. You won’t regret adding her to your summer road trip playlists.

As of writing this article, Kirby has up to 127,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, her album was released on February 19th, 2021.

Rock on,
Will
